It's unclear just how the young elephant came to be stuck in that well near the village of Kerala, but one thing was certain - she wasn't going to make it out on her own. The slippery dirt walls of the deep pit meant there was no hope for her to climb out. All the poor elephant could do was wallow in the muddy pool at the bottom.
The other members of the elephant's herd could not do much to assist her either, but fortunately the helpless creature's hopeless situation caught the attention of folks in the area who were capable of lending a hand.
Alerted to the frantic trumpeting by the calf's family, villagers by the dozens turned up to the well to help, as India Currents reported.
Heavy machinery was brought to the site to carve a slanted ditch leading to the base of the well. The hope was that the little elephant could then climb up and out. Even then, though, she had trouble escaping.
To give the exhausted animal the extra boost she needed, the crowd of kindhearted rescuers positioned a rope beneath her rump and helped pull her up.
Sure enough, their efforts paid off.
The elephant appeared no worse for wear from the time she'd spent deep down in the well as she scampered off into the forest to reunite with her herd. She was gifted a fresh chance at a long lifetime thanks to a group of strangers who were willing to do all they could to help see her on her way.
