This Valentine's Day demonstration hosted by Berliners For Banning Horse-Drawn Carriages will take place in Berlin. However, all concerned citizens are invited to stand up for horses on the same day in their respective cities, or simply support the efforts in Berlin by posting about it using #VDayForTheHorses.
We will be dressing up for the occasion, and there will be music. While we love romance and charm, there is nothing romantic or charming about the horse-drawn carriage tourist industry. Our aim is to get the city officials of Berlin to do the right thing and ban this cruel, antiquated practice.
It is 2016, not 1816, and horse-drawn carriages exist in direct discord with our modern city landscapes. This is painful and traumatic for horses forced to pull carriages through city traffic. Standing stationary in sub-freezing weather while awaiting the next fare, collapsing in the summer heat, being tethered to a heavy carriage while weaving through dangerous, scary traffic––all while inhaling exhaust fumes from cars just inches away from their noses.
These horses often live in deplorable conditions off-duty. Animal protection guidelines are frequently violated by the carriages companies; even the most basic comforts are often not afforded to the struggling horses. The horses did not give their consent to working long, painful hours each day. They do not benefit from doing this highly stressful work until the day they collapse. We must protect them by banning this cruel practice.
Berlin is known as a progressive city and should stand as a positive example for the rest of the world by banning the exploitative horse-drawn carriage industry. There are plenty of viable and far more charming alternatives into which this tourist industry can transition, like beautiful classic cars (even electric ones) and human-driven carriages.
Many cities have already banned the use of horse-drawn carriages. Let's demonstrate our compassion by supporting the ban of horse-drawn carriages here in Berlin. Join us! https://www.facebook.com/events/1006391179422626/
