Leeds, who is a student at Columbia University, told The Dodo about his project:
My motivation was the recent pushback by SeaWorld in the media. I'd read their "truth" sites and realize that they are trying to spin all the good work that came from the movie. Additionally, while the Orca Welfare and Safety Act has been put on hold for the time being, if it gets pushed through it will be the beginning of the end for Orca's in captivity for entertainment purposes. Once something like that gets passed in one state it eventually spreads.
SeaWorld and marine parks profit off keeping orcas and other marine animals in captivity -- despite evidence that captivity not only induces unnatural behaviors in whales, but also endangers trainers. Join us in pledging never to visit SeaWorld or other marine parks until they empty their orca tanks.
