Recently, a new site has popped up on the internet claiming to be an "independent" news source for information about the oceans and marine conservation called "Awesome Ocean." As it turns out, not only is site openly funded by SeaWorld, it's also run by just one SEO marketer whose company -- wouldn't you know it -- also lists SeaWorld as a client.
We took a closer look at just what this site was publishing. We found that out of 52 stories total, 29 stories were just used as promotion for SeaWorld. Here are the 10 most egregious examples of SeaWorld propaganda featured on the site with their original headlines in bold:
1. Why SeaWorld Means So Much
"If a place like SeaWorld inspires even a tiny fraction of the visitors that go through their gates, they will have done something very good for our planet. Here's to another 50 years of inspiring the public, SeaWorld!"
2. Who Doesn't Love Science?
"When people visit SeaWorld they do three main activities, see the incredible shows and presentations, ride rides, and make connections with the animals ... In conclusion, killer whales at SeaWorld receive the utmost care."
3. New Study: Whale Watching May Not Be So Safe
"It sincerely looks like the only safe whale watching is in SeaWorld and other accredited Marine Mammal parks, where the whales and dolphins are safely separated from humans and boats in an environment that is healthy for them."
4. Independent AP Study Shows Marine Mammals Living Longer In SeaWorld
"When accounting only for orcas born in captivity and not captured, SeaWorld's killer whales had an average life expectancy of 46 years. Populations of killer whales off British Columbia and Washington state that are often used as a benchmark for wild orca populations have an average life expectancy of around 49 years."
5. Proof Sanity Still Exists: California "Blackfish" Bill Stalls
"In a written statement, Sea World [sic] spokesman David Koontz criticized Bloom for associating with "extreme animal rights activists who regularly campaign against Sea World [sic] accredited marine mammal parks and institutions."
6. Epic Dolphins Surf Better Than You
"The safest whale watching is at your local Aquarium, SeaWorld or zoo who supports efforts to protect wild whales and dolphins!"
7. SeaWorld Celebrates "World Ocean Day"
"Over the past 50 years, SeaWorld has continued to be a pioneer in inspiring individuals to care for our oceans."
8. Blackfish is Dead Wrong and Here's Why
"When taken to its logical conclusion, this trend shows that someday the armchair activists may look up from their angry Instagram debate to find that the SeaWorld orcas are in fact, the only orcas remaining."
9. SeaWorld Voted One of the Top 10 Travel Companies to Work For - Video
"SeaWorld outranked its Florida, California and Texas theme park competitors by being the the only theme park company to make the list!"
10. Who Would Shoot An Orca?
"Now, after SeaWorld and other marine parks have brought us the wonder, majesty and beauty of orca it is hard to believe that was the case, but it was indeed the practice of fisherman to kill them whenever they encountered them."
SeaWorld and marine parks profit off keeping orcas and other marine animals in captivity -- despite evidence that captivity not only induces unnatural behaviors in whales, but also endangers trainers. Join us in pledging never to visit SeaWorld or other marine parks until they empty their orca tanks.
