More than a decade ago National Geographic reported on the details of northern Thailand's horrifying "crush," a centuries-old ritual designed to domesticate young elephants involving abuse, deprivation, isolation and starvation -- all designed to break the baby elephant's spirit and to make the young elephant submissive to humans.
