Researchers studying housecat intelligence say that all domestic felines are actually quite skillful learners, particularly when it comes to freeing themselves from confinement. In a set of experiments conducted by Edward Thorndike in 1911, cats were shown to be able to escape "puzzle boxes" by using trial and error to disengage the mechanism keeping them in. Thorndike found that, in time, all cats would figure out how to unlock the box, and would remember how do so more quickly with each subsequent test.
