Ricochet, a golden retriever, is known for being a different kind of service dog: she's the only dog in the world who surfs alongside people with disabilities, helping them ride the waves by riding on the same board. This week, Ricochet helped make the wish of a terminally ill teenager come true by surfing with him off the San Diego coast.
Caleb Acosta, a 15-year-old from Florida, was diagnosed with stage-four brain cancer last summer. After multiple surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, doctors say tumors in Caleb's brain and spine are inoperable. According to a San Diego CBS affiliate, when Caleb spoke with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he told representatives that he saw a "cool dog" on TV who surfs with kids, and all he wanted was to hit the waves with her.
The teen was thrilled to surf in California for the first time, and said spending time with Ricochet "made all his problems go away for a while."
