SANParks has since darted and recaptured Sylvester. Sylvester is being kept in an enclosure with food, water and shade while SANParks decides his fate. The enclosure is surrounded by an electric fence.
Sylvester is "still extremely skittish, as expected," according to SANParks, which has declared the entire area around Sylvester's enclosure "off limits to all non-essential staff, guests and the media alike."
The momentum calling to save Sylvester may have slowed, but his life still hangs in the balance.
"A final decision on the lion's future will be made once authorities are in agreement that he has adequately settled down and once they have thoroughly explored all the options available to them," South African National Parks wrote on Facebook on Monday. "No set time frame is available for this."
"Please keep him alive," one commenter wrote (among dozens of others in support of Sylvester) on SANPark's Facebook post. "There is no reason to murder him."
"Many eyes are watching to see what happens next. Let this story have a good outcome and show people that conservation is what you do," another wrote.

SANParks didn't immediately reply to The Dodo's request for comment.
