Man Builds Little Chair For Squirrels In His Backyard
A squirrel named Buddy loves it.
It's pretty typical for people to feed birds in their backyard. But squirrels? They're usually the animals people shoo away.
Larry Spencer, however, is a man who defies convention.
In Spencer's backyard in Crawfordsville, Indiana, he feeds the squirrels first, and the birds second. "What the squirrels don't eat, the birds will come and they'll get that," Spencer told The Dodo.
He'll feed the squirrels peanuts and corn - mainly in the winter, when it's harder for the squirrels to find food.
But Spencer doesn't just feed the squirrels - he also makes sure they're comfortable while they eat. To do this, Spencer got a teeny chair and nailed it to a tree.
Jill Runge, Spencer's partner, helped to pick out the chair. "We found the chair at the garage sale," Runge told The Dodo. "I thought it was cute because it looks like one of those old metal chairs that your grandparents used to have."
The squirrels started using the chair immediately. "As soon as I put corn up there," Spencer said.
One squirrel in particular - whom Spencer calls Buddy - likes to commandeer the seat. "He'll sit up there and eat away for about a half hour," Spencer said.
The problem is, the chair's getting too small, or maybe Buddy's getting too big. "He's just about getting too fat," Runge said. "It's not big enough for him anymore."
But Spencer thinks he has a solution: "I'd like to find a chair for two people," he said.
For now, the squirrels seem content with the one chair, and Spencer and Runge love watching them sit on it while they eat.
"They're very entertaining," Spencer said. "And they're great company."
