Kiaya lives in a world that's gone dark. Thankfully, she's got two loyal pals to help her find her way.

By all accounts the 10-year-old Akita is a perfectly happy, normal dog, aside from one key aspect: She can't see. Kiaya gradually lost her sight a few years ago after developing glaucoma, which was severe enough to require that both her eyes be removed. But what she lacks in her ability to see is more than made up for by the love that surrounds her.

Since going blind, Kiaya's siblings, Cass and Keller, have stepped up in a big way - guiding her through the darkness like seeing-eye companions.

Sensing that their sister is different and at times needs support, Cass and Keller are rarely far from her side. Their owner, Jessica VanHusen, says the sighted siblings make life easier for Kiaya in ways both small and big, like by keeping her steady when her footing is wobbly, clearing room by her bowl during meals and cozying up next to her so she knows they're there when it comes time to nap.

"They're an inspiration to everyone," said VanHusen. "I hope others will see them and realize that a special needs pet deserves a chance."

Even Kiaya's veterinarians from BluePearl Veterinary Partners hospital, where she was treated, are stunned to see just how her siblings have helped her adjust to losing her sight.

"It's amazing to watch," veterinary ophthalmologist Gwen Sila said in a press release. "It's clear the other dogs are trying to protect her. Their sense of loyalty is really remarkable."
