Starting May 10th, the Naked Turtle Rum company is partnering with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to encourage Americans in five states to turn off their lights. The "Kill the Lights, Save the Turtles" campaign is part of a long-standing effort to protect endangered sea turtles who nest on U.S. coastlines, where artificial beachfront lighting can cause deadly confusion for new hatchlings. By replacing normal light bulbs with with turtle-friendly fixtures, beach residents in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Hawaii can save hundreds of turtle lives.
"Kill the Lights, Save the Turtles helps to educate beach residents on the importance of turtle-friendly beachfront lighting," David Godfrey, executive director at the Sea Turtle Conservancy, said in a statement. "We're more than excited to continue our mission with The Naked Turtle in a both educational and celebratory manner while spreading the message to more people in year two."
