It's a sad day for animals and the people who love them.
Sam Simon, a longtime animal advocate and co-creator of the TV show "The Simpsons," passed away at home on Sunday afternoon after a long battle with cancer.
The Sam Simon Foundation announced the sad news on its Facebook page on Monday. Simon was outspoken about his terminal diagnosis, and he dedicated his life and his finances to animals.
Among Simon's many achievements on behalf of animals: He started a foundation to take in stray dogs, opened a vegan food bank, traveled to Taiji, Japan, to protest the dolphin slaughter, helped rescue several grizzly bears, bought a fur farm to save 400 chinchillas, donated massive sums of money to PETA and even bought a ship for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to monitor Japanese commercial whaling.
