When UK actor Ricky Gervais sat down for a Q&A with The Guardian, the conversation quickly veered towards animals -- and didn't really stray from that point. Gervais, whose Twitter is constantly peppered with tweets about his love of (and outrage on behalf of) animals, began by noting his most treasured possession:
If you don't count the cat, the guitar from Spinal Tap that Christopher Guest gave me for my 50th birthday.
Gervais also noted that animal cruelty is "the only thing that really depresses [him]." Then, when asked when he last cried, he offered this touching anecdote:
Over a YouTube clip about animals. "Laboratory animals see sunlight for the first time", or "elephant mourns his best friend the goat". I watch something like that every day and I'm always in pieces.
Happily though, Gervais has his own furry friend to comfort him. When asked how he relaxes, he said, "Every evening after a bath, I sit on the couch with a glass of wine with my cat on my lap and watch TV."
But, it's not quite enough -- when asked "What single thing would improve the quality of your life?" Gervais gave the perfect answer: "A dog (I don't have one because we're back and forth over the Atlantic and it would be cruel to leave it)."
