When 7-year old Kaelyn "KK" Krawczyk was diagnosed with a severe form of mastocytosis, a disease that can cause life-threatening allergic reactions to everyday occurrences like heat and exercise, her parents feared they'd never be able to leave her alone for a minute. But a terrier named JJ came to the rescue. The pup can smell certain cell changes before KK has a serious reaction, and warn then her parents that she needs her medical kit by barking and tugging on their clothes.

KK has to travel often to the hospital for kidney procedures, and her doctors realized that the dye used in surgical procedures can trigger dangerous allergic responses. So, again, JJ came to the rescue -- doctors allowed him into the operating room, where he could alert the anesthesiologist in advance of a reaction so they can treat it with medication before it becomes dangerous.
