"Reference: Young male pit bull At: Arizona Maricopa Animal Control WEST Kennel # 194 Control # A3564987 Contact Lt. Reynolds of Animal Control and place a "hold" on this sweet guy Wk Ph: 602.506.2744 Cell Ph: 602.526.1742 Hello, My name is Lisa Messina, I am a police lieutenant for the Phoenix (AZ) police department assigned to the South Mountain Precinct. I have been a cop for over 28 years now and in that time I have seen so many sad things that it gets harder and harder every day to come to work and do my job. I find that the best way to get through my day is be tough, seal off my emotions and don't let anything get to me. The South Phoenix area that I work is a low income area where putting food on the table and clothes on their children's back is a full time occupation for the people that live there and the pets that are in their lives rarely get more than a passing consideration. Dogs in the area are not well taken care of, run loose on the streets , rarely get neutered or spayed or vaccinated and too often are abused, chained in yards for their entire lives and used in dog fighting. As most law enforcement now a days we are stretched too thin, work long hours, take untold risks every day and even sacrifice our lives for a community that often doesn't appreciate us or worse, hates us. Within this populace are hundreds of dogs that are malnourished, abused and used in dog fighting. It seems that the community doesn't care and officers are too busy to take time out of their patrol duties to take an injured animal to shelter or call dead animal pick up to pick up their remains after they get hit by cars. Amongst all of the daily chaos called "life" I met a young pit bull last week with extraordinary compassion and intelligence that is going to be put to death whose only crime was running loose on the streets. I wrote the below commentary the day after I met him when I solicited help from the local shelters and dog rescues to help me get him placed into a rescue where he could be saved. I have four dogs of my own and honestly tell you that this dog demonstrated qualities of compassion, desire to please and obedience that my own pack doesn't have. This dog loved people and sat against my leg or tried to climb into my lap and rest that big gigantic head on my chest to be close to me...for the past six days he has been sitting in a cage, isolated from the human interaction that he craves waiting to be rescued. Living under those circumstances for the last six days he has now been labeled "dog aggressive" and interest in him has all but disappeared. I know the dog that he is inside and what he is capable of becoming: he won't live long enough to show anybody. If you can help by placing a hold on him or better by bringing him into the Cesar Millan Foundation, I swear to you, you will not go wrong. Please give me and this poor guy an opportunity to show you who he really is."
