Born on September 9, the young calf was the most recent addition to the zoo's collection of reticulated giraffes, a subspecies of giraffe common to zoos.
But at only 1 month old, he got understandably excited while playing with several other giraffes in the enclosure.
"A number of animals all moved into that (area), one started running and there was built-up excitement," zoo director Scott Barton told The Sacramento Bee. "It seemed playful and then they got faster and faster."
He ran straight for the metal barrier that kept him in the enclosure, but he got caught in the wire and suffered a neck injury. He then fell to the ground where he remained for several minutes until staff arrived, according to reports.
