The bear bile industry has only gained worldwide attention very recently. Bile is a digestive juice produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder that is valued for many traditional Asian medicines. The bile is extracted using either a metal catheter or by creating a surgical wound that allows for extraction -- both of which cause incredible pain for the animal. Animals Asia, a partner in creating the new website, estimates that there are over 10,000 bile bears in Asia. But organizations like Animals Asia have made great strides in the past few years, focusing on public awareness campaigns like this one to reduce demand.
