From an early age I have held an interest in all animals. I dreamed of being a combination of Doctor Doolittle and Tin Tin. I wanted to travel the world on grand adventures and make friends with all the animals I came across.
The images in this set, The Shepherd's Realm, Volume I were created on various travels in the U.S. and Europe. I did a month long artist residency in the Netherlands were I photographed the animals in zoos. I chose the Netherlands because they seem to have the best zoo system in the world, with a lot more space given to the larger animals than I've seen at other zoos. From there I shot landscapes and castles in the highlands of Scotland for another month. I spent a lot of time in post-production "freeing" the animals from the inclosed spaces and putting them in more natural settings.
I try to engender a sense of amazement and wonder. Through editing and assembling new scenes from actual photographs, I'm constructing a fantasy world. As one author defined Romantic Realism, these photographs are my portrayal of the world, "as it could be and should be." The Shepherd's Realm Volume I is my proof that the world is a humbling and wonderful place where polar bears exist (for now), white lions congregate near castles, and cats jump creeks in the middle of the night.
