It started with the Manila tags. A stationary store down the street from my old apartment in Oakland was going out of business so everything was marked down 80-90% off. I picked up these large 8x4 manila tags on a whim. At the time, I was taking a night class at SFAI to rework my long-dormant painting muscles. I had been working at design agencies since 1997, and since that time up until 2008, had only sketched for work, sometimes doodling animals. That class reinvigorated me and when I saw the tags, I thought I'd give them a try as a surface. I ended up ordering a box of 1000 from a wholesale company.
Birds are tagged in the wilderness to follow their patterns and habits; here on the manila they are tagged for their unique beauty. I have done roughly 80 of these over the past few years. Their small size lends well to small spaces and antiquarian rooms.
