A badly injured yellow lab who found herself trapped in the middle of a busy Houston freeway on Friday morning is now recovering safely, thanks to one concerned citizen. Rickey Young, a contractor, was on his way to work when he heard a radio report about a dog who'd gotten stuck in the center of an HOV lane at rush hour. Police were already on their way to the scene, but Young immediately headed toward the stuck stray and beat the officers there.
"I'm just kind of a softy on that stuff," Young told KHOU. "I have a dog and would hate to see him on a highway like that."
When Young first approached the dog, she was skittish and shy, and even attempted to back away back into the road. Eventually, Young was able to lure the dog to his truck with a sandwich he'd brought for lunch, while roadside cameras captured the entire rescue. "I could see that she was thankful and she was happy to be in a safer environment," he said.
Young took the dog to a nearby veterinarian, where she was found to have suffered several broken bones and internal bleeding. According to the vet, the dog likely would have died on the road if nobody had stopped to help her. Now, she's recovering in peace.
