Woman Sees Man Board Bus With Suspicious Box — Then Realizes What He's Done

She noticed the box was moving.

It's probably not often that a routine trip on a city bus changes a person's perspective on the world. But last week, that's exactly what happened to Camila Muracchini.

Muracchini was heading to work by public transit in São Paulo, Brazil, last Monday when she noticed a man step aboard clutching a suspicious cardboard box. As she later described on Facebook, the man appeared to be nervous — and Muracchini noticed that the box was moving.

Not surprisingly, it made her anxious.

"I'm already thinking about what he might have in there," Muracchini wrote. "I'm extremely worried ... until I hear the first bark."

While the barking sound from within the box seemed to put Muracchini more at ease, it had the opposite effect on the man.

"He looked around, frightened that he would be kicked off the bus for having an animal with him," Muracchini recounted. "When the ticket collector asked, 'Is that a dog there?,' he replied very softly: 'I found him abandoned. He's a puppy. I'm taking him home.'"

Moved, no doubt, by that reply, the bus official chose not to take action against the man.

"After realizing that nobody was going to ask him to get off the bus, he sat with the box in his lap and stayed there," Muracchini wrote.

The simple scene involving a stranger on the bus might not seem like much to some people, but for Muracchini it was a touching glimpse into a side of humanity that's so often overshadowed by negativity and suspicion.

"During the whole trip, he pet the dog, and the dog wagged his tail as if he had known the man for years," she wrote. "A love so pure, it makes me believe there are still good people in the world."
