On early Thursday morning, two one-year-old lions somehow managed to swim across a moat and climb out of their enclosure at Germany's Leipzig Zoo.
Now one of them is dead.
The zoo went on lockdown after it was discovered that Majo and Motshegetsi were missing. Zoo workers worked quickly to corral the animals back into their enclosure.
When they were discovered they were fenced in by workers and shot with tranquilizers.
But the drugs weren't working fast enough, the zoo said, and "the second lion had to be shot." It's unclear as of now whether it was Majo or Motshegetsi who was killed.
"The sudden twist has shocked us all," zoo director Jörg Junhold explained. "The loss makes us extremely sad, but the decision on the protection of human life was inevitable."
The two lions had lived together their whole short lives. They were born at the Basel zoo and have lived at the Leipzig Zoo since August.
