She roamed the streets of Bulgaria, her body emaciated. All her fur had fallen off to reveal cracked, dead skin.
A desperate plea made on Facebook to the Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) was what ultimately saved her life.
"There was a link to a local news article which was calling for her to be caught and destroyed in case she was diseased," Diane Rowles, one of the founders of RSDR, said in a blog post. In the photos provided, the rescue saw just how mistreated and neglected she was.
Alerted to this dog's plight, staffers from the RSDR drove about 43 miles to the town where the stray dog had been spotted, without any concrete idea about where she was. They worked with locals to help pinpoint her location. She was eventually found near a traffic circle.
When she was called out to, she came right over, "cowering as she approached us, but desperate for contact," Rowles wrote. She suffered from a slew of health issues.
She was given the name Khaleesi, after Daenerys Targaryen's character on "Game of Thrones."
"We knew that if she was to make it, she had to be strong [like Daenerys]," Rowles wrote.
There was no room for her at the rescue, but that didn't stop the RSDR staff from accommodating her. She was given a spot in the kitchen, antibiotics, painkillers and a nice hot bath.
Khaleesi quickly made herself right at home.
She also proved to be a star role model when visiting the vet.
With love and the proper support, Khaleesi's healing journey had finally begun.
As Khaleesi's story became known, she was adorned with fans and gifts from other countries.
Khaleesi also found a best friend to hang out with …
… during sunshine and snow.
This is what Khaleesi looks like today. She is about 4 years old, happy, healthy and active — and she's up for adoption.
Her story is a powerful one, her transformation, incredible. A survivor of abandonment and neglect, Khaleesi proves that every animal, no matter her condition, deserves a chance to be loved, a chance to thrive and a chance to be the best version of herself.
