Gina, Tuna, Nala, and Lil Bub are among Instagram's most famous and furry celebrities -- eliciting awws and guffaws from a combined 2 million followers on the popular photo-sharing service. And now, thanks to a clever new campaign organized by the Best Friends Animal Society, these distinguished dogs and cats are using their notoriety to help pets less fortunate.
Prior to achieving internet stardom, each of them were shelter animals rescued by their clearly doting owners -- sparing them from being one of 9 thousands cats and dogs euthanized every day in the United States. They're now urging others to do the same.
Lee Clow, agency chairman, says the campaign is all about making adopting pets the hip thing to do:
"Wouldn't it be great if we could get people to see that the smart, cool and socially responsible thing to do is to rescue a pet rather than buy them from a breeder or a pet store?"
