Roberto is a wounded veteran, shot during the Vietnam War in 1970, and was one of the hospital's very first patients when it opened in 1974. Today, he is paralyzed and his organs are failing, according to News 4 San Antonio. So, Sugar and Ringo made the 150 mile trip to the hospital, on the anniversary of the day he was shot, May 21.
The visit was also a testament to Roberto's love of the animals, as both he and his wife trained and raised horses for nearly 40 years together.
"When the horses came up to him, he actually opened his eyes," Rosario told News 4 San Antonio. "They came up to him and I think they were actually kissing him."
