Winnie is a three-legged horse, cared for by a French association called "Suzi Handicap Animal"
Winnie is a five-year old Pottok horse who suffered a serious accident... He lived in the mountains in semi-freedom, but his left hind leg was traumatically amputated in a fall. The bone was probably cut on rocks, but we will never know the exact circumstances of the accident and his injury. His flesh was dragged upwards during the accident and subsequent amputation, forming a tourniquet which miraculously saved his life. He was alone in the mountains for several long days, fighting to survive.
When found by his then owner, he was taken to a vet who cut straight through the bone to tidy up the wound. But following his accident, when he was one-and-a-half years old, Winnie returned to live in the mountains with the other Pottok horses and received no further care or prosthesis until he was five! This left him with severe injuries ...
Winnie was advertised on a French website called "Le Bon Coin", under the "small ads" section. People alerted me to the advert and I went to see Winnie straight away. What I found was an emaciated horse, completely hunched over. On 23 April 2015, I was able to purchase Winnie from his owner who drove him to the association. It was a shock to be faced with a gaunt, exhausted, weak, lost and completely disorientated horse. I simply couldn't hold back my tears...
The next day, Winnie was examined and given emergency treatment by a vet. His stump had been unprotected and had been rubbing against the ground for several years. When I first saw him, his stump was bleeding and foul smelling. He was also suffering unbearable pain in his back and pelvis. We are currently doing our best to help him and he has been placed in a stable offering specialized care.
Looking after Winnie
On 13 May 2015, Winnie underwent initial surgery to remove scar tissue and clean up the stump. The surgery had to be performed with Winnie lying down and everything went well. Unfortunately, the stump infection was too severe and the initial surgery did not suffice. The stump will have to be amputated much higher and this requires a lot more preparation. After the surgery is complete, the careful process of designing a suitable prosthesis for Winnie will begin. Once Winnie's wounds are fully healed, he will be sent to the thalassotherapy centre where he can swim and have clay therapy and massages.
The budget for Winnie's recovery is approximately 18,000 euros including VAT (20,000 US dollars) for all the operations (including the initial surgery and subsequent amputation), two months' hospitalization and rehabilitation, and designing a suitable prosthesis. This is an enormous sum, especially for such a new animal protection association which was only set up in 2014.
Donations will be used to pay all bills for surgery and thalassotherapy rehabilitation and to manufacture a prosthetic limb.
We therefore appeal to donors' generosity. Winnie deserves to be saved, having already suffered so much. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you!
