'Most Matted' Cat Of The Year Gets Emergency Buzz Cut

Everyone's had a bad hair day, but only one feline can be the "most matted" cat of 2016.

That's what rescuers recently called a poor Persian whose beautiful coat had become a clumpy, knotted mess while she wandered the streets of London alone.

The Battersea Dogs and Cats Home said the stray's hair was so tangled they had no choice but to give the cat named Penelope a radical fur-ectomy.

"Penelope was in a really grubby state when she arrived at Battersea, who knows how long she's been on the streets by herself," said Lindsey Quinlan, Battersea's Head of Catteries, in a statement. "She's still quite young and rather small so it's lucky she was found and rescued by someone before she ended up in an even worse state."

Penelope is now recovering from her special haircut, but Quinlan hopes she'll soon find a new home and be back to her luxurious, long-haired self. In the meantime, Penelope has been given a tiny, custom-fitted sweater to keep her warm.

"She's a really friendly cat who enjoys a fuss and being around people," said Quinlan. "She's a long haired Persian, so will need an owner who'll be willing to keep her coat in good condition, with regular grooming to avoid her becoming a matted moggie again!"
