Jimmy's resistance to being a prop in a silly ceremony came as no surprise to his owner. Just a day earlier, groundhog handler Jerry Hahn, who keeps Jimmy as a pet, told Madison.com that the furry animal had a bit of an "attitude" - and made an uncanny prediction.
"He's not going to be all that interested in whether he sees his shadow or not, but he knows he's got his job to do," Hahn said. "So I'm going to hope that Jimmy doesn't want to take a nip out of his ear when I bring him up to him."
Hahn disagreed with the mayor's translation of Jimmy's forecast, forcing the city to release a statement saying that only the mayor can translate the groundhog's prediction.
It's unclear whether or not Jimmy's little outburst will mean he gets to sit out for next year's event - but he gave the mayor a pretty good reason to consider it.
"He got his point across," Freund said, seeming to take the bite in stride. "He certainly has my ear."
