The new year has brought a new calf for one gray whale mom, who was spotted with her newborn off the coast of Dana Point, Calif., on New Year's Eve. A drone outfitted with a camera spotted the pair coasting along through the waves.
The footage, shot by the operator of Captain Dave's Dolphin & Whale Safari, a whale watching company, is being touted as the "world's first drone footage and photos of a newborn gray whale" - though this is unconfirmed. It is nevertheless impressive - weighing in at some 1,500 pounds, the newborn is quite a big baby. As Capt. Dave Anderson notes, creases in the whale's back show how the calf was folded up inside his mother just days before.
