A pod of migrating humpback whales joined by a pod of dolphins shocked surfers at an Australian beach, when they sidled up to say hello. The surfers and other onlookers captured some fantastic footage of the swarm.
At first, whale researchers worried that something was wrong -- the animals were rolling around in the water, prompting fears that they were caught in netting. But happily, everyone was fine -- they were just playing.
Said ORRCA vice-president Shona Lorigan:
Their migration is a major journey and sometimes when we see them they are on a mission and bolt up the coast with Queensland on their minds, while others take a more leisurely trip. This one was more curious and came close to the shore to play.
