Despite these long-held beliefs which still prevail today, research has clearly shown that they are little more than myths. Fish do feel pain, fish do suffer, fish can learn and remember (e.g. Braithwaite, V., 2010) and the humble goldfish can live for up to 20 years (IUCN). There are a number of groups carrying out important work in raising awareness about fish welfare and they are gradually (apologies in advance for the pun...) making waves.
We hope that, with our newest campaign, we can add some support to that work and help to take it forward. So whilst, right now, we are focusing on the whales that are currently exploited by SEA LIFE aquariums, this is just the beginning. We look forward to keeping you updated with progress.
For now, please put your name to the petition to see an end to the cruel cetacean circus hosted by SEA LIFE in its Shanghai centre: www.sea-lies.org.uk/petition
