Ducklings are remarkably skilled at overcoming even the most insurmountable-seeming of obstacles -- but sometimes they need a helping hand.
Firefighters in the city of Rossville, on Staten Island, were dispatched on a different kind of emergency call Sunday after an entire generation of baby ducklings was spotted in desperate need of rescue after having slipped down a storm drain.
According to the Staten Island Advance, a dog walker was first alerted to the desperate youngsters by their mother, who was seen "frantically quacking and flapping its wings" where her cohort of tiny followers had tumbled in.
First responders from Ladder 84 arrived without delay, working quickly to open the heavy sewer grate and carefully lift the helpless babies out with a net -- reuniting them with their undoubtedly relieved parent.
"They went off happily with their mother," said one witness to the heartwarming scene. "I think it was a great thing...the community and everyone coming together to rescue the little babies."
