Those folks on Facebook could have easily chosen to brush off what they'd seen, or chalk it up to some twisted joke - but instead, they acted. In fact, enough people alerted local police to report the posting that an officer was sent to visit the home of LaRay, whose real name is Cherica Winston.
There, Sgt. Chris Amsler discovered that the puppy had not been harmed as the Facebook post described, though conditions were far from acceptable.
"A small dog, located in a small crate, the dog was all by itself, no type food or water," Amsler told Fox 31 Denver. "There was an awful smell. ... The animal had been peeing in the crate and was soaked in the urine."
Things were so bad, in fact, that Winston now faces charges for animal cruelty. The puppy, meanwhile, was rescued to the safety of the Aurora Animal Shelter, where she will be soon made available for adoption to a loving home.
