This Afternoon Seattle Council member Kshama Sawant said the council and mayor are responsible for holding the Woodland Park Zoo accountable for the two Asian elephants, Chai and Bamboo.
Friends of Woodland park zoo elephants and advocates were present in the city chambers today, A compelling case was made that sending the elephants to a sanctuary instead of another zoo is the best way to avoid animal cruelty."
Sawant requested the council's legal department draft a bill to recommend a course of action.
"This council bill, I think, will help address the elephant in the room," she said. "Couldn't resist that."
That legislation could have been voted on by the council at the next upcoming meeting but the majority of council members refused by 5 votes to 2 Animal activists then surged to the front of the chamber demanding the council put the legislation on the next meeting.
They were ejected by security...
It would have halted the transfer of the elephants to any other zoo, and send them to PAWS sanctuary.
