Duck Escaped From Slaughterhouse Will Live Out Her Days On Sanctuary
Up until recently, this beautiful bird was bound to be dinner. Last week, the daring duck freed herself from the confines of a poultry slaughterhouse in Brooklyn, somehow managing to escape her cage to make a break for freedom. After spending about five days in hiding without food or water behind a building nearby, the escaped duck was rescued by volunteers from a New York-based animal advocacy group, the Empty Cages Collective.
"The duck was starved and dehydrated when we finally got to her," ECC told the Gothamist. "But she should make a full recovery."
The duck's rescuers say she has since been transferred from the bustling city to tranquil grounds of the Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Pennsylvania -- a rescue center which cares for neglected and abandoned farm animals -- destined now to live out her days a bit closer to how nature intended.
According to sanctuary staff, yesterday the once-captive duck swam for the first time in her life.
