Lost Puppy Seems Completely Normal — Until They See His Eyes
A 5-month-old puppy was found abandoned and wandering the streets of Texas all on his own - completely blind.
Vet Ranch, which specializes in rescues, took in the puppy, later named Harvey, and discovered he had a very unusual condition.
Harvey has microphthalmia, a condition that causes eyes to be abnormally small. In Harvey's case, the condition has also rendered him completely blind - but little Harvey never really seemed to mind.
"He doesn't know he's injured or has an ailment at all; he's just a happy little puppy," Dr. Matt of Vet Ranch said in Harvey's rescue video.
Harvey was extremely matted and dirty when he was found, and the Good Samaritans who discovered him cleaned him up before taking him to Vet Ranch. Originally, Dr. Matt thought they would have to remove Harvey's tiny, nonfunctional eyes, but Harvey seemed so happy and content that they decided to spare him the invasive surgery.
Harvey may be completely blind, but his blindness has no effect on his happiness or love of life.
He's been neutered and treated for tapeworm, and other than that he's been deemed completely healthy. He has absolutely no trouble finding his way around, and can even seek people out while playing hide and seek.
"He uses his ears and nose better than any dog I've ever seen," Dr. Matt said.
Shortly after his rescue video was posted, Harvey was adopted by a forever family, and made the long trip to his new home in Canada. There's no doubt that little Harvey will bring much joy to his new family, and will never let his differences get in the way of his happy life.
"He has no clue that he's any different than any other dog," Dr. Matt said.
