Shot through his leg with an arrow and left wandering the streets, a little dog has been rescued from a life of pain and fear.

"It was horrible," Rebecca Eaves, president of the appropriately-named rescue group The Arrow Fund, told The Dodo. "He looks pretty rough."

In addition to the large arrow sticking out of his back leg, he had a bad skin infection and looked like he had been severely neglected.

The 1-year-old beagle-border collie mix, whom rescuers aptly named Robin Hood, had been a regular visitor to someone's backyard in Leslie County, Kentucky, where she fed him scraps and kept an eye on him.

Late Tuesday night, she saw him show up with a thick arrow sticking out of his back leg. The Arrow Fund, which provides medical care to severely abused or neglected animals in Louisville, Kentucky, was notified about his plight and rushed out an alert to their Facebook followers.

Several volunteers stepped up and within hours Robin Hood had arrived in Louisville. He was taken to a 24-hour emergency hospital, where the arrow was removed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Eaves said that his prognosis is good, and that he's still in the care of the hospital. Robin Hood's on pain medications, and the hospital is waiting on medication to help clear up his skin. He's already feeling well enough that he doesn't want to be trapped in his dog crate.

"He just wants to get out," Eaves said. "And hopefully be loved, and one day be in a forever home."
