Cockfighting Sting: 550 Birds Rescued From Enormous Virginia Compound

An investigation into a massive cockfighting ring in Virginia led to the seizure of 550 birds this week, thanks to a huge coalition that includes the ASPCA and local law enforcement. The rescuers acted on a search warrant to seize the birds from three separate properties near Pound, Va., where they found the birds in despicable conditions.

Now, the birds are being kept at a temporary shelter where they are housed and cared for by veterinarians.

"Cockfighting is a violent blood sport that results in a tragic outcome for these victimized birds," said Tim Rickey, vice president of ASPCA Field Investigations & Response. "Our goal is to remove these animals from the cycle of violence and suffering, and provide medical care and treatment for those with serious health issues. We're grateful to the local authorities for pursuing this case and sending a message that cockfighting will not be tolerated in our country."
