Pet Resort Throws A Special Pool Party Just For Shelter Dogs

"They all got the ‘zoomies’ after swimming. It was just too much fun!”

Unfortunately, shelter dogs don’t often get a lot of time to run around, play and just be themselves while they’re waiting for someone to finally adopt them — and so one pet resort decided to throw some shelter dogs a pool party to help make all the waiting a little easier.

The owners of Second Home Pet Resort have always loved rescue pets, and have worked with local rescue groups in Arizona for many years. And so when an employee of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) contacted Second Home Pet Resort asking if it could host a party for some of their shelter dogs, the owners very quickly and excitedly agreed.

“Whatever we can do to help pets get adopted, we are in,” Jordan Cowan, resort director at Second Home Pet Resort, told The Dodo.

Eight dogs were put on the list for the pool party: Rogue, Grayson, Bean, Henry, Loki, Ozzie, Benito and Polo. Seven of the dogs came from the shelter’s West Valley branch in Phoenix, and one came from its East Valley branch in Mesa. Staff made sure all eight dogs had time to meet and hang out before the party, though, to ensure they’d be on their best behavior and get along at the actual event.

When the day of the shelter dogs’ pool party finally arrived, each dog was accompanied by a volunteer from MCACC, in case they needed anything during the party. As soon as the dogs saw the lavish pool that was all theirs to play in …

… they definitely went a little nuts!

Each and every dog who attended had an absolute blast, and they all had different parts of the party that they enjoyed the most.

“There was an American bulldog, Rogue, who climbed the waterfall so she could ‘supervise’ the party,” Cowan said. “There were a couple of pups, Henry and Grayson, that liked to give wet smooches to the volunteers after they got wet in the pool! They all got the ‘zoomies’ after swimming. It was just too much fun!”

Some of the volunteers even got to go swimming too, which the pups absolutely loved. Overall, the party went on for about two hours, and by the end, all the dogs were exhausted and very, very content. While the dogs did eventually have to return to the shelter, the party was a fun way to socialize them and help make them a little more adoptable, so that one day they’ll all have families of their own to play outside with every day.

“We would LOVE to throw another pool party,” Cowan said. “Our staff find it extremely rewarding and love this part of their job in helping homeless pets find their forever homes.”
