“It would be unusual that they didn’t do that,” Brown said. “When the dogs break down, they can just be slaughtered and eaten and quickly replaced.”
Brown said that since there are no animal cruelty laws in China, it’s difficult to stop these sorts of abuses — and easy for them to gain popularity.
“There’s a tremendous amount of cruelty to animals in China — unspeakable things — and the perpetrators don’t answer to anyone,” Brown said. “But there’s no animal protection laws, so any of this cruelty, including the dog rickshaws, is not illegal.”
