Dog Alerts Family To House Fire — Then Runs Inside To Save Her Baby Sister

"She [had] my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety."

An adorable young pit bull named Sasha is being hailed a hero this week — and for good reason.

Thanks to her quick thinking, the dog's family avoided what could have been a fatal tragedy.

Late on Sunday night, Latana Chai was lying in bed at home in Stockton, California, when she was stirred from sleep by a frantic sound. When she got up to investigate, Chai discovered that it was Sasha, barking and throwing herself against the back door.

It was then that Chai realized that she and her 7-month-old baby Masailah were in serious danger. Sasha knew it first.

"As soon as I got to the door, she runs in [and] starts barking, and I’m like, 'What the heck is wrong with you? Like, you don’t do this,'" Chai told KCRA 3. "I looked up and there’s black smoke coming from my neighbor’s house. You can see the flames coming out."

With the fire quickly spreading to Chai's unit, time was of the essence for the family to get out. Sasha evidently knew that too.

The dog ran straight for Masailah.

"I ran into the room and I see Sasha," Chai told the news station. "She has my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety."

Following the dog's lead, Chai picked up Masailah and rushed outside, where she called 911 for help.

Firefighters were soon on the scene to put out the blaze.

Damage to the building was extensive, but all the residents were able to escape in time — thanks to Sasha's early warning.

"She saved us all," Chai wrote online. "She is our hero. Without her, we probably would've never made it out."

If you would like to help, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Chai and her family get back on their feet.
