Dog Hates Popular Treats But Takes Them Anyway Just To Be Polite
“If we are in a drive-through or if we are on a walk and someone gives her one, she'll hold the Milk-Bone until we are far enough away and then place it on the ground.”
River and her sister were found living together as strays before being taken in by a rescue. When River was finally adopted, her new family noticed that she had excellent manners and was VERY polite — even when she was being offered something she didn’t particularly care for.
From the very beginning, River has never been a fan of Milk-Bone treats, a popular brand of dog biscuits. She’s never once eaten one, but doesn’t want to be rude by turning it down when someone offers her one. So she takes it anyway, and carries it around until she can drop it somewhere without anyone noticing.
“I first noticed River didn't really like Milk-Bones right when we got her; she would always gently take the treat from my hand but would then walk away and place it on the floor and stare at me like she didn't know what to do next,” Stephanie Hill, River’s mom, told The Dodo.
River often accompanies her mom on errands and various adventures, and store owners or neighbors love to give River Milk-Bone treats whenever they see her, as that’s the brand they usually have on hand. She accepts the kind gesture every single time — and then waits until she’s far enough away from the person to discreetly leave the treat behind somewhere without offending them.
“Depending on where River gets the treat kind of depends on how long she'll carry it in her mouth. For instance, if we give her one at our apartment she'll hang on to it long enough to get into the living room and drop it,” Hill said. “If we are in a drive-through or if we are on a walk and someone gives her one, she'll hold the Milk-Bone until we are far enough away and then place it on the ground.”
River is so thankful to her family for rescuing her and giving her a loving home, and it seems she never wants to seem ungrateful for anything in her new life — and so she accepts every treat given to her, just so she never has to hurt anyone’s feelings.
River’s family has since found lots of treats she does like, and gives them to her frequently. She always eats them right away, and only discards the Milk-Bones — leaving dozens behind for her mom to find in random places.
“I believe at one time I had around 10 Milk-Bones in my car because she wouldn't eat them,” Hill said.
