Lost Little Kitten Shows Up At Bookstore — And Decides He Owns The Place
He's been there 11 years and everyone knows he's the BOSS 🐱📚
When Spike was just a kitten, he ended up on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, left to fend for himself. He wandered by Left Bank Books, an independent bookstore, one day, and when staff members saw the tiny black kitten all alone, they knew exactly what they had to do.
They took him into the bookstore and adopted him as their store cat, and nearly 11 years later, he’s still there, and loves every minute of his job as a bookstore cat.
Spike is not the first cat that Left Bank Books has adopted off the streets. There were two other cats before him, both black just like Spike, and now he is the reigning king. Spike lives at the bookstore 24/7, and loves greeting guests all day long while the store is open and making sure everything is in order all night long while the store is closed.
“He has everything he needs: food, water, endless new books to sleep under,” Lauren Wiser, marketing and publicity manager at Left Bank Books, told The Dodo. “We say he's our night manager. He keeps an eye on all the books until the shop opens in the morning.”
Spike considers every inch of the bookstore his home, and isn’t afraid to lounge on the shelves …
… take naps on top of books …
… and be a little bit (or very) in the way. No one ever minds, though, because the bookstore is his home, and everyone who works there absolutely adores their furry coworker.
“Spike loves working at the bookstore,” Wiser said. “He even has his own Staff Pick page on the website. His favorite things to do are sleep in the display window so people outside can adore him, sleep under a bright light where it's warm, sleep in a director's chair downstairs in the used books, sleep on top of new displays (to make sure people notice them, of course) and interrupt staff meetings.”
Spike has become a bit of a local celebrity in St. Louis, and even has his very own Instagram account. Sometimes people come into the bookstore just to see Spike, and he’s (usually) always happy to greet his admirers.
“People love to see Spike wandering the shelves,” Wiser said. “I think one of the questions we get asked most, besides questions about certain books, is, ‘Where's Spike?’ Sometimes we can guess where he is, and sometimes he hides from all of us! It's really Spike's choice whether he wants to come out and greet his adoring fans. Some of our customers even bring in treats for him. Spike gets Christmas presents every year!”
Spike knows he’s the favorite employee at Left Bank Books, and thus tries to make his presence known as often as he can. He shows up to every major event held at the store, and loves weaving through the aisles of chairs, saying hello to the audience members, and then interrupting the event to say hi to the featured guests as well.
Sometimes he likes to cause a little mischief …
… but at this point, he’s sort of entitled to it. After all, it’s his store, and everyone else is just shopping in it.
“When he's feeling frisky, he'll jump on top of shelves and make everyone nervous,” Wiser said. “Sometimes we're not even sure how he climbs up to certain places! He also tries to ‘inspect’ the bagels at our staff meetings. Once he flung about 100 shopping bags all around the floor under the front desk. We didn't even get mad at him, we just caught it on video because it was so funny.”
Spike is a treasured part of the staff at Left Bank Books, and he takes his job very seriously. Spike will continue to be the best bookstore cat he can possibly be until his final days, and in return, everyone who comes into the store will continue to give him all the love he could possibly want.
