A one-year-old Catahoula hound has begun a miraculous recovery in Texas, after being shot in the eye and abdomen and left for dead. Over the weekend, the incredible dog -- now named Chance, because he's gotten a second one -- wandered into the yard of a woman in Caldwell, northwest of Houston, bleeding but alive. After calling law enforcement and animal control to no avail, the woman contacted True Blue Animal Rescue, whose president, Melanie DeAeth, arranged the emergency veterinary treatment that saved Chance's life.
"It's the saddest thing you could see that's also a miracle," DeAeth told the Houston Chronicle. "It made me cry."
According to Chance's vet, Lee Panko, a bullet from a .22-caliber gun entered the middle of the dog's left eye and exited through the back of his head. Panko said Chance's eye has become extremely infected and will need to be removed but, somehow, he's suffered no brain damage. Chance is currently recuperating at DeAeth's home, where he'll stay for the remainder of his surgeries before he's put up for adoption.
