Editors' note: Our readers feel strongly that the cat is in distress, and we're sorry we drew attention to a video of a scared animal. We hope the cat's people are reading the comments, too.

Self-awareness can be truly terrifying - especially when you're confronted with a huge blown-up version of yourself, as evidenced by one of the internet's latest cat videos.

The people Mittens lives with decided to see what would happen when they showed her a picture of herself.

The results were ... extreme.

"Mittens, that's you!" a voice filming the confrontation says to the cat. "That's you!" echoes the little girl, as she pursues Mittens with a larger, 2-D version of her own image.

Her humans snicker (pretty insensitively), as they pursue her with the portrait, and Mittens loses the blithe, careless attitude for which cats are known.

Self-possession and the ability to sit for hours in silence staring out the window: These are some of the reasons we love them. Their need for naval-gazing is nil.

That some creatures aren't gawking at themselves on Facebook all day is, these days, quite a relief.

We hope this cat was never terrorized again by her own image.
