In this world, it seems as if animals are finally starting to matter. Animal rights activists are on the rise and their efforts are becoming more successful in communities everywhere. We should be proud. Things seem to be taking a turn for the better. But are we really there yet?
As a highly sentient species and as a whole, humans feel entitled to many things that aren't really ours. We feel entitled to hunting any and every species. We feel entitled to testing our cosmetics and medicine on any and every species. And we feel entitled to destroy the homes of any and every species. Why? Because we're intelligent and supposedly, those who live in the ecosystems we destroy are not.
Despite tons of evidence proving many animals are, in fact, sentient, it seems as if we aren't really paying attention. Slaughterhouses are still murdering animals in horrendous ways under the impression that the animal isn't feeling anything. From fish to cows, animals killed for fur, meat or otherwise are still suffering. It's unfortunate that many people are under the impression that animals do not feel pain. I assume that makes them feel better about the situation, but the truth screams otherwise.
Aside from animals killed from meat and fur, the animal world is suffering at our hands. Now, I'm not ranting to be pessimistic about mankind. Thankfully, the amount of people who are trying to do the right thing is slowly, but surely rising. It's a good thing. And I am proud to be a part of that movement, however, I think it is immensely important that the general public be educated about the sentience of animals.
Now, I don't think that's the single solution to the madness. However, I think it's an important part. If most people knew how immensely intelligent orcas were from the beginning, would they have supported SeaWorld and places like it? Had people known how intelligent pigs were, would they be happy with the current treatment of them? Maybe, maybe not. But I think it's a great place to start.
What do you think?
