When Lou's life needed saving from an abusive former owner, his adoptive family stepped in to help. Over the weekend, he got to return the favor.

Chris Julian and Kelly Yarbrough were asleep with two of their young children when a fire broke out in their Carbondale, Penn., home early Saturday morning. Yarbrough suspects they may have failed to notice the smoke and flames in time to escape had it not been for the family's furriest member - Lou.

As flames shot out of the attic and down the hallway, the heroic pit bull alerted his family by running frantically back and forth. He barked and barked, refusing to stop until he knew they were safe.

"The fire was coming through the door and the dog saved our lives and if it wasn't for him, we'd all be dead right now," Yarbrough told news station WNEP.

Sadly, the family's home and all of their material possessions were destroyed in the blaze, but Yarbrough says she's full of gratitude nevertheless - especially for Lou.

"I'm grateful for God and the way that it did happen. I'm grateful God gave me Lou, our dog," she said.

While it's fortunate Lou had a chance to save the family who rescued him, now they can all use help getting back on their feet. Yarbrough has set up a donation page asking for assistance rebuilding, noting again that "if it wasn't for Lou, none of us would be alive today."
