A horrifying video uploaded to YouTube has launched a search for the cruel owners who locked their cat in a washing machine - and then turned it on.

The video, which has since been uploaded by several different accounts, shows the camera zooming in on the frightened cat peering out of washing machine as the abusers talk and laugh in the background. One of them reaches forward and raps on the glass, startling the cat.

Then they start the washing machine, laughing as the panicked cat scrambles to escape a chamber that is quickly filling up with water, meowing loudly for help. The episode was allegedly "punishment" after the cat didn't use her litter box.

There's absolutely no excuse for this kind of cruelty - and police in the Russian city of Magnitogorsk, where the video is thought to have originated, are trying to track down the abusers, the U.K.'s Daily Record reports.

At the end of the video, the cat's abusers open the door of the washing machine, and water comes pouring out along with the terrified cat. Scared and drenched but still able to run, she bolts out of the room.

YouTube's community guidelines don't expressly mention animal abuse, but the site claims to "draw the line at content that intends to incite violence or encourage dangerous or illegal activities." Viewers are encouraged to help police the site themselves, and to click "report" on videos that violate those guidelines.

Here's hoping the police are able to find the cruel humans who did this - and filmed it - so they can be stopped from hurting any more animals.
