Even being cruelly abandoned in a Texas park couldn't quash this brave dog's loving nature: Last week he led rescuers right to a litter of puppies who might not have made it if it weren't for him.

Rescuers from local organization Dallas Dogrrr had been trying to catch the homeless pup to bring him to safety, but day after day he avoided them - until one night, when he greeted the rescue workers with loud barks.

"Every time we got closer he would go away and bark at us saying, 'Keep coming. Keep coming my way,'" one of the rescuers told CBS 11. They followed the dog off the trail and into the woods, where he led them straight to a mama dog and her litter of newborn puppies.

Rescuers named the dog Hero, and, thanks to him, the whole crew is safe and in a foster home together, where Hero continues to watch over the puppies whose lives he saved. As soon as they're old enough, they'll be up for adoption, as will Hero.

"Although he might not be the biological father, he is the most loving and nurturing dog dad," the rescue posted in a Facebook update on Sunday.
