10-Day-Old Quail Embryo Stars In Brilliant Microscopic Footage

It's safe to say this 10-day-old quail embryo is the most famous quail embryo ever. Seen growing inside its egg in a three-dimensional video, the little guy (and his photographer) won the prestigious Nikon Small World photomicrography competition on Wednesday. The video, compiled from more than 1,000 separate images by Gabriel Martins of the University of Lisbon, shows the almost 23-millimeter long embryo in brilliant clarity -- some of the most detailed, visually fantastic footage of a growing embryo ever seen.
